Alex Cherry / Of Sound and Vision

This past week I’ve been loving the art work of Alex Cherry (Of Sound and Vision), a 23 year old from Los Angeles. He uses Photoshop and Illustrator to create gritty yet ethereal images. Some of the images on his Flickr account are subtitled with band names. I’m not sure if he is doing work for these bands or just using them as inspiration, but either way, the kid can obviously rawk. You can purchase prints at DiviantART.

Les Machines de l’Ile is an art project located in Nantes, France. Artists François Delarozière and Pierre Orefice bring years of set building experience to the exhibit which opened in July of 2007. The first major machine is an enormous elephant weighing in at 45 tons and measuring nearly 40 feet high and 26 feet wide. Levers and pulleys allow some of the 49 passengers to control parts of the animal, including the life-like jointed trunk. Future major machine projects include a Marine Worlds Carousel (2010) and Heron Tree (2014). Other smaller projects include a squid, pirate fish, manta ray, lantern fish and more. Oh and did I mention that you can ride some of these things?! I couldn’t have imagined a more wonderful place.

Fire-Breathing Babybot

Japanese artist, Kenji Yanobe, has created the toddler of all toddlers. The 24 ft robot goes by the name of Torayan and supposedly, will only respond to the orders of a child’s voice. Yanobe has described him as “the ultimate child’s weapon”. We can only hope that he doesn’t learn to walk, cry or become sentient.

Mademoiselle Caroline Rivière

Mademoiselle Caroline Rivière (1806) by Ingres is one of my favorite paintings. I can’t wait to return to Paris and see it at the Louvre.

Who Am I?

So I photographed this at the Musée National d’Art Moderne at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. I love it but have no idea who the artist is that created it. I spent hours trying to figure it out one night. It was part of a traveling exhibit, so checking the Pompidou site didn’t help. Anyone know?

Update: Thanks to my friend, Cory,  for informing me that this painting is La Grande Odalisque (1964) by Martial Raysse.
