Herakut

Last month I had a healthy debate with a friend who has decided to pull away from the internet to aid his creative mind. I wholeheartedly disagree with this approach. It’s a gift of the times that we live that we’re able to not only inspire and be inspired, but easily collaborate.

Hera and Akut (better known as Herakut) exemplify this synergism for me. While I have no idea what they accomplish individually, I think that what they create together is difficult to beat.

El Mac and Retna

Check out these murals by El Mac and Retna. Damn these guys make some beautiful art together. And we’re lucky enough to have the one just below in the SLC! It’s absolutely breathtaking.

Consort Study

One of my favorite artists, Ray Caesar, is offering a rare and smoke’n deal which includes a copy of his Art Collection book set (signed limited edition) and the newly released Consort Study print. Still this $500 bargain is a little out of my price range. Sigh… A girl can dream.

And just in case you’re not familiar with Ray’s devilish (and equally innocent) work, here are few of my other favorites. You can follow Ray on his site or blog and purchase his art from the Jonathan LeVine Gallery.

I. Heart. T’s.

At any given moment there are at least 10 t-shirts that I’ve fallen in love with and have to resist buying. I guess it’s the poor man’s way of owning art.

Below are a few that I’ve got my eye on. Click on image to link to the site.

Miso

Paper Tiger just posted a wonderful new print by Miso. Miso, Karen Hsiao, is an L.A. artist whose fascination with “ecocatastrophe, biology and the science of evolution” has lead her to create delightful (and sometimes creepy) paintings and sculptures. A science geek artist? I love her.

You can follow her progress through her site or blog.

Shake It!

Today my man-friend and I went to IKEA to look for a  number of things including salt and pepper shakers. Apparently Europeans hate the stuff because we couldn’t find a single shaker. Or maybe it’s just that we’re shopping impaired.

Anyhow, I came home and decided to give Etsy a go at it. What I found was a treasure trove of really bad handcrafted items. But there were a few really cool diamonds in the rough. Okay, so maybe the baby hands will give you nightmares, but they’re also awesome.

Babybot for a Better Life

And I thought the fire breathing babybot would be the last time I saw a ginormous baby robot. Isabel Coixet, the Spanish director who both wrote and directed Bastille (one of the 20 segments from the wonderful film collage, Paris, je’taime) has created an enormous and strangely realistic infant for the Shanghai Expo 2010. In response to the expo’s theme, “Better City, Better Life”, Coixet says she hopes to remind the world that “all our actions have direct consequences on our children’s future and that we have to react to this”. Amen, sister.

Every Painting in the MoMA

And this is why the internet is so great. This video claims to show every  painting in the MoMA as of two weeks ago. You’ll spot plenty of Van Gogh, Kahlo, Gauguin, Picasso, Miró and Matisse. Among my favorites are Gauguin’s Still Life with Three Puppies, Matisse’s Goldfish and Sculpture , Seurat’s Grandcamp, Evening and anything by Rothko. What about you?

The Great Wave of Hippity Hoppities

As a lover of all things lagomorphic, I can’t help but adore the art work of Kozyndan. I was pretty excited to see this new vinyl prototype of their popular work, Uprisings (which is based on Hokusai’s The Great Wave of Kanagawa). You can purchase prints here at their shop.

…and the original…

… and some other rad Kozyndan creations
