Top Albums of 2009: 21-30

December is the worst. I hate that it’s dark when I get to work and dark when I get home. I despise wearing socks. Digging my car out from its icy tomb makes me want to take hostages. And if Silent Night were a person I’d punch him in his glasses.

But there is one thing that makes me giddy for this time of year – top album lists! They’re such a great way to be a lazy researcher.. just let everyone else sift through the crap and present the gems. With that said, here’s some of what I was left with after my yearly sift. Starting at 30 and working backwards…

Also I’d love to hear what albums you were crazy for this year!

The Symphony of Science

FINALLY science and the auto-tuner have gotten together! Who hasn’t been waiting for this moment? The Symphony of Science is a project started by John Boswell to “deliver scientific knowledge and philosophy in musical form”. Here’s “A Glorious Dawn” by Carl Sagan featuring Stephen Hawking. Hilarious stuff! Check his site for two other fantastic videos.

I’ve been sick and lazy this week.. but now I’m getting back on the blogging horse!

The Twin Peaks theme between the first and last song…  totally not intentional, totally sweet.

You Say Party! We Say Die! – Laura Palmer’s Prom

Dead Hearts

How can I stop obsessing over Dead Man’s Bones when they keep producing such fantasticness?! I love this perfectly nightmarish video for Dead Hearts. It takes a bit to get going but the creepy wishbone is totally worth it.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Karen O, Kids and Beasts

Karen O is having an incredible year. The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s latest album, It’s Blitz! is one of the best albums of 2009, in my opinion. As if that’s not enough, Karen O is the voice and  energy behind the Where the Wild Things Are soundtrack. It’s fantastic! I love that they opted for the genuine, unpolished voices of untrained children.

Here’s a cool clip of the making of the soundtrack. The movie is due out tomorrow!

My Body’s a Zombie for YOU!

deadman'sbones

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m gah gah over only one actor… Ryan Gosling. Or as Kelly calls him (to tease me) –  The Delightful Ryan Gosling. Apparently The Delightful doesn’t know when enough awesome is enough. For the past few years he’s been working on a music project, called Dead Man’s Bones ,with a buddy, Zach Shields. They create spooky old-time music and employ the clattering voices and hands of  children from the Silverlake Conservatory of Music (ages 5-17). You can listen to their new song “My Body’s a Zombie for You”, via Pitchfork. The song is great. I’ve already listened to it 3 times. I can’t wait for their first album, due October 6th.
