Short Stack

I love sharing music but hate writing about it. So instead I’ve decided to periodically just post a short stack of current favorites and leave the analysis up to you.

Below are some songs that I’ve been loving on over the past few weeks.

The Thermals

Thermals

I first became interested in the Thermals after falling in love with their song, “A Stare Like Yours”, from their 2004 album, Fuckin A. Admittedly, Hutch Harris’ voice was a bit of an acquired taste, but after being drawn in by the band’s catchy melodies and energetic execution, I soon found myself not just tolerating his voice, but being smitten by it.

Their new album, Now We Can See, is both more sophisticated (if you can use that word for this genre) and accessible than earlier albums, while retaining their scrappiness and enthusiasm. It has easily become one of my favorite albums this year.

Whether intentional or not, Harris’ lyrics are thick with Taoist themes and seem to contently observe the ebb and flow of life, celebrating mortality and embracing our return to the elements. Many of the songs are abundant with references to existing in or returning to the earth, air and sea, as in “When I Died”

I took off my clothes / I took off my skin / Started shedding my arms / To start getting my fins / Crawled to the sea / That was calling to me… / I was only just past the low tide / When I died / My head did swell / I said to myself / “Nature sure took her sweet time” / I was already losing my spine

Other songs nod to the Taoist view that life and death are simply a transformation of life-force through cycles in nature. As in “I Let it Go”

I looked my fear in the eyes / Looked at the cold ground below / I knew I could love or die / I let it go! / I let it go! / Four on the floor / Two in the air / Out of the sand / Out of the sky / Into the flow

And “You Dissolve”

You dissolve / It’s just another way you exist / It’s just another way you survive… /It’s just another way you depart… /You dissolve into steam / You dissolve like a dream

I realized yesterday as I was listening to this album on my iPod that I was slowly “starring” every song, marking them all as my favorites. So picking only a few to share is almost impossible, but here ya go.

Futomomo Satisfaction

I’m not really sure how or why this happened, but I’m pretty glad it did.

Futomomo Satisfaction (futomomo = thigh) is a Japanese 10-piece band with a wonderful gimmick: 3 bikini-clad girls, front and center, rock’n their trombones. The girls skillfully execute covers from a wide array of genres, from punk to jazz. Even so, would the band be getting this much attention if they were a bunch of hairy dudes? Probably not. But, they’re not. So we will watch and we will be delighted!

This first song sounds a bit like a Man Man song. Actually, I’d be delighted to see Man Man play in bikinis too.. especially that dreamy Honus Honus and his stupendous mustache. In fact, I think the mustache deserves a bikini of its own.

Ahhh, but I digress. Here’s a fun little clip from Futomomo’s SXSW show.

Crystal Stilts: Crippled Croon

The Crystal Stilts are responsible for one of my favorite albums of last year. I hijacked this video of them playing Crippled Croon off of Pitchfork TV.

Telepathe

telepathe1

Telepathe is a Brooklyn-based electro-pop duo. From what I’ve learned, their style has changed and improved quite a bit since the emergence of Dave Sitek (TV on the Radio) as their producer. Their new album, Dance Mother, incorporates tribal drums, dubstep beats and spaced out ambient sounds with shimmering synths. Telepathe’s exploratory nature, coupled with lyrics like Trilogy’s “Let’s make out in the snow. I’ll fuck you up, you ought to know” make them interesting even when they’re not completely on target.

Oh and Andy Milonakis’ description of them is pretty hilarious.

Forest Fire

tfff

Forest Fire‘s album, Survival, was pieced together over 8 months by members from 2 states on opposite sides of the country (New York and Oregon).  Their label, Catbird Records, describes their music as “homegrown hymns for those with no religion”. At its surface, Forest Fire is raw, noisy folk-rock, but a number of the tracks have deeper layers of clashing horns reminiscent of Neutral Milk Hotel. I’m particularly fond of their darker lyrics that sound more like internal dialog, such as “I only wanna seem good in front of the right people… why can’t I kill someone I hate” and “I don’t like what I’ve become”. The French indie music site, La Blogotheque, named Survival their number one album of 2008. With our love of stinky cheese and Forest Fire, The French and I are bound to be fast friends.

The Builders and the Butchers

builders-and-butchers1

Apparently I have something for bands that form in Alaska and move to Portland. My friend Bri recommended The Builders and the Butchers to me probably three times before I took the time to listen. Since then, theirs has become my most listened to album. I’ve not yet seen them live but have heard that their shows are ridiculously fun. Not only does lead singer Ryan Sollee have wonderful stage presence, but the band has been known to pass out washboards and tambourines to the crowd. During their cd release show in 2007, they led the audience out of the venue and onto the street where the entire crowd sang Find Me in the Air. I can’t wait for them to put out another album of wonderful depression era sounding songs.

You can catch them March 1st, but you’ll have to drive to Boise.

Top Albums of 2008

Because I didn’t have this blog at the end of last year, I thought I’d post a list of my favorite albums of 2008. I would probably rearrange the order and swap some out with other albums now, but I’ll post them as I did at the end of December.

Portugal. The Man

I’m not going to pretend that I have any musical expertise or even that my taste is all that great. But! I do love to search for new music and share it.

portugaltheman

The members of Portugal. The Man hail from the Northwest, but I would have never guessed it. It’s difficult for me to place them in a genre. But I can say that whether a particular song is steeped in classic rock or jazz, it is always soulful. Plus, they get points from me for speaking out on their site against that impostor, Sarah Palin, back in September.

According to their myspace page, you can catch them in Salt Lake on March 11th @ The Urban Lounge.
