Fuck Buttons: Surf Solar

I’m loving Fuck Button’s new song “Surf Solar”. This video’s pretty awesome too. Although with such a sweet track name, I was kinda hoping for unicorns surfing on the sun or something of the sort. I suppose whirling penguins layered on a city of lights is a close second.

RAD – Send Me an Angel

Today I passed by a co-worker’s desk who was listening to “Send Me an Angel” by Real Life which instantly reminds me of the 80’s BMX movie, Rad. When I was a wee lass I thought this was the frog’s pajamas. It’s pretty funny now. Oh how I wanted to be Lori Loughlin! I had the big hair but was a little light on the sweet bike moves.

Richard Dawkins – Queerer than we can Suppose: The Strangeness of Science

I love this TED talk by Richard Dawkins in which he describes how our perceptions limit our understanding of the universe.

Scott Avett Art

I spent last night perched on a grassy hill, drinking wine and listening to the Avett Brothers. As always, they provided fantastic folk melodies and incredible doses of punk-level energy. How a person can sing, play guitar or banjo and stomp on a kick drum all at the same time, at differing tempos, is beyond me. More talent exists in those two brothers than in my entire bloodline.

And as if I needed proof, today I stumbled across Scott Avett’s art work and its pretty damn impressive. Some guys have it all..

The Secret Lives of Seahorses

Dwarf_seahorseaI’ve been dying to go to the Secret Lives of Seahorses exhibit at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Seahorses are such strange and romantic little things. They perform courtship dances (lasting up to 8 hours), hold tails, swim snout to snout and bond monogamously for a season.

Then to top that, the males carry and birth the babies! What gentlemen. The female deposits her eggs into his pouch, using a tube called an oviduct, where he fertilizes and incubates the fry until they are ready to swim out fully developed. The pouch provides nutrients, oxygen and regulates salinity.  The male even produces prolactin (a hormone found in pregnant women) and has contractions during the birthing process.

Pigmy SeahorseYou can find an archived webcast here of Monterey Bay Aquarium experts discussing seahorses, pipefish and sea dragons. It’s about an hour long but has some really great photos and videos.

If you’d like to aid in the conservation of one of America’s only species, you can send a note to Governor Schwarzenegger of California asking him to support legislation which will help protect marine areas. Monterey Bay Aquarium makes it easy by providing a form which can be personalized and delivered from the site.

My Body’s a Zombie for YOU!

deadman'sbones

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m gah gah over only one actor… Ryan Gosling. Or as Kelly calls him (to tease me) –  The Delightful Ryan Gosling. Apparently The Delightful doesn’t know when enough awesome is enough. For the past few years he’s been working on a music project, called Dead Man’s Bones ,with a buddy, Zach Shields. They create spooky old-time music and employ the clattering voices and hands of  children from the Silverlake Conservatory of Music (ages 5-17). You can listen to their new song “My Body’s a Zombie for You”, via Pitchfork. The song is great. I’ve already listened to it 3 times. I can’t wait for their first album, due October 6th.

Leia Bell Magnets

Saturday SLUG hosted a spectacular Craft Lake City event with local artists and craftsman from the Salt Lake area. I couldn’t resist adding more Leia Bell magnets to my current collection. Maybe one day I’ll actually own a print or painting! Check out her site to browse and purchase her works.

Here are the magnets that I took home:
