Octopus Hijacker

I love these little hijackers, especially when they’re running away on their tentacles. Apparently this video is the first documentation of octopodes using tools. I can’t wait until they unite with orangutans and crows to take over the world.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Robots Birthing Robots

Say hi to Noelle, the pregnant robot. She was created to train med students and I think she’s pretty neat. I only wish that they would have made her a little more realistic, either by making her face really pissed off or by adding a “curse-like-an-angry-sailor” button. If robots ever become conscious, I wonder if they’ll look back at this and find it super creepy.

Seamount Expidition: Sea Creatures!

Juevenile Oreo Fish

The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) recently completed a six-week expedition to the southern Indian Ocean. The crew studied six seamounts with the goal of  developing “ecosystem approaches to fisheries management for biologically-globally significant and commercially-important areas beyond national jurisdiction, the high seas.” They collected nearly 7,000 species, many of which are new discoveries and delightfully odd!

Check out their blog for an account of their adventures and additional photos.

Also, you can support IUCN and projects like this one by donating here.

Bunny’s Warren

Recently I’ve realized that due to the hodgepodge nature of my posts I’ve developed two very different types of readers who visit this site for two very different reasons. For instance, I’m pretty sure my grandma doesn’t care which bands I’ve been listening to this year and, on the other hand, I’m pretty sure those who are interested don’t really care that one of my bunnies just did a really cute flying kick while simultaneously shaking her ears. On second thought, my grandma probably doesn’t care about that either, but she’s obligated to feign interest.

So, I’ve decided to make the split and have created a different blog, Bunny’s Warren, which will be my outlet to report everyday happenings, trips, thoughts and progress with leukemia. I will also be hosting my CML info pages there. Battle Bunny will continue to be a place where I catalogue my mini-obsessions and share my excitement for random discoveries in music, art, robotics, nature, science  and anything else that strikes my fancy.

Hate Sheep, Love Holiday Sweaters

Just in time for Christmas I stumbled across this fantastic site, We Hate Sheep, We Love Holiday Sweaters. You can create your very own Christmas sweater! If only I’d known about this a month ago. Better late than never!

Here is the sweater I would have created. For some reason there was a panda bear available. Yes, please, I will make the giant panda a part of my Christmas experience!

There’s even a hall of shame on this site! Oh please, oh please let me make it! (See what sorts of things you can waste your time on when you don’t have kids!)

Sparkington (the Alien)

O-M-G! My brother and his girlfriend are so amazing. Check out this incredible piece of metallic delight they got us for Xmas! I am in awe. I want to cuddle him while I sleep but I think for my safety (and his) he’ll have to remain on the mantle next to Buddha’s head. A duo made in heaven!

Gentlemen, Scotch, and Song

Kell and our friend Jared have started a new podcast, Gentlemen, Scotch, and Song. You can listen as they sit down with a fine glass of scotch, discuss music in a polite fashion and completely rock out. I love the chemistry between the duo, which isn’t surprising since they are such funny individuals.

They’ve posted their first show and another should be up in the near future. So settle in with your own libation and flip your hearing switch into the “hell yeah” position.

You can listen via their site or iTunes.

Below is the playlist from their first show:

  1. “Revenge” by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse featuring the Flaming Lips.  Album “Dark Night of the Soul” in 2009.  Visuals on the project from Mr. David Lynch.  Website : http://dnots.com/
  2. “Brazil” by Cornelius.  Album “Point” on Matador Records in 2002.  Originally composed by Ary Barroso/Bob Russell.  Notes : Original Portuguese version written by Barroso in 1939 under the name “Aquarela do Brasil”
  3. “Bell” by Screaming Females.  Album “Power Move” on Gon Giovanni Records in 2009.
  4. “Dove” by Ikon, remixed by Stephane Pompougnac.  Album “The Concorde Lounge – Super Sonic Jet Set Love” on Casa Brutus records in 2003.  Originally composed by Ireland/Rizzo.
  5. “The Sheep Look up” by dj /rupture and Andy Moor.  Album “Patches” on Cargo Records in 2009.
  6. “Zum Zum” by Mike Monday.  Album “Smorgasbord” on Playtime records in 2006.  Originally composed by Mike Monday.

$*&#$!

There are two things that just baffle me.

1. How can Christians, who say they believe “love they neighbor as thyself”, be opposed to socialized medicine?

2. How can you have children and not become a raging environmentalist?

I’ve been keeping an eye on the Copenhagen Climate Summit and it’s just so disappointing. How do people not understand that we are dooming our own progeny to a bleak existence? I mean, the very best scenario is that they’ll be living in a world where a third of the animal population has gone extinct and rain forest are a thing of the past and cancer levels continue to rise. I don’t understand how anything you can do or buy for your children could be as wonderful of a gift as a beautiful healthy earth. Our governments aren’t going to fix this. Governments want growth.. that means they want to produce and export and import and build and see population booms. I don’t see them ever stepping in to stop this thing that is already spinning out of control. Climate change will eventually cost our countries far more than it would cost us to reduce our carbon emissions to a healthy level now.. but that’s in the semi-distant future and as much as we say that we care about posterity, it really comes down to “as long as it doesn’t cause me discomfort”.
